June 5 | World Environment Day: For a more sustainable and just planet
The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1972 that June 5 would be World Environment Day, and since then it has become an annual occasion that highlights environmental issues and global challenges that threaten the planet Earth. This day is an open invitation to the international community, with its official and civil institutions, to take joint action to protect the environment and preserve natural resources for future generations.
Civil society activities in recent years have proven a vital role in confronting the risks of climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, local initiatives led by civil society organizations may contribute to reducing emissions by up to 4% by 2030. World Environment Day, which is organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme, is one of the largest global platforms for environmental awareness, with millions of people from more than 150 countries participating in it. To raise awareness and encourage environmental action.
We at the Arab Center for the Sustainability of Civil Work, and within the framework of the activities of the Arab Green Volunteering Club, affirm our firm commitment to supporting civil society organizations in the Arab world and enhancing their environmental role. This comes through the club’s activities, most notably (regional developmental campaigns for environmental awareness and the Arab Sunbulah Volunteering Award to honor green initiatives) with the aim of enabling civil society organizations, youth and volunteers to adopt more sustainable practices.
Today, on this World Environment Day, we renew our call to all actors in the private sector to redouble their efforts for a more balanced and sustainable Arab environment, as the green future begins with initiative... and grows from commitment.
